I recently moved into University Club in Charlotte, NC. It is in a convenient location right next to the campus at UNC Charlotte where I attend school. I didn’t know much about the area, just that they had very competitive prices compared to other apartment complexes in the UNCC area.
I moved my stuff in and began to set up my living room the way I wanted it. The place was moderately spacious. As a college student I didn’t have that much stuff to move in and set up so it suited me just fine. I didn’t need anything too crazy.
In the middle of my move in I was approached by my next door neighbor. We introduced ourselves, exchanged names and did the whole small talk thing. However, I was surprised to find out that she came over to warn me about the crime that often occurs here. She told me to keep my exterior door locked all the time and be careful at night.
I was a bit spooked by what she had told me, but I shrugged it off and continued to move in. It was one of those situations where I though “oh that won’t happen to me.” However, I was sadly mistaken.
Roughly two weeks after moving in I heard a loud banging on my door one night. However, it didn’t sound someone was knocking for me to answer, it sounded like someone was trying to gain entry to my apartment. I ran down the stairs with a baseball bat to see what was going on. I looked and saw someone with a crowbar trying to break in. He saw me at the window and ran off.
This scared me and I called the police, however there was not much they could do about it. I was feeling very uneasy about what happened that night, and began really watching my back around there, and made sure my door was locked at all times.
A few weeks went by with nothing happening and my nerves began to ease up a little bit. I didn’t feel like I needed to worry as much. So I went out of town to see some relatives for a weekend. This ended up being a horrible decision.
I came back to find my door luck busted and my apartment broken into. My HDTV was stolen along with my Ps3, and some other valuables I had in the house. I was so distraught and scared to see this. I filled a police report, but nothing has come of it.
I really regret moving into University Club, and I have installed a secondary lock on my door to keep intruders out. Apparently this has been a reoccurring problem at University Club, and I wish I had done some more research on this place before I moved in. I can not wait for my lease to be up.
